We have been spending a lot of time recently on medications for ADHD. However, one question we should always be asking ourselves is: "Are medications always necessary?".
Believe it or not, there are a number of nutritional deficiencies that can trigger ADHD-like symptoms or worsen the disorder. There are definitely instances where merely fixing key nutritional imbalances over a period of a few weeks can lead to positive results.
Before we go any further, we need to examine how this all works out. It helps to think of ADHD as a puzzle, where one or more pieces are missing. If we can correctly fill in the missing puzzle piece(s), then we can treat the disorder. Of course this is oversimplifying it a bit, and no, nutritional and "natural" strategies do not always work. Nevertheless, I believe they are grossly under-utilized. After all, if a vitamin supplement gave the same results as an amphetamine-based drug, which one would you choose for you or your child? The answer is a no-brainer.
Based on a keynote article on Ritalin vs. supplement treatments for ADHD, which is frequently cited by the "natural cures for ADHD" crowd, we see compelling (albeit limited) evidence that natural supplementation can be as effective as Ritalin for treating ADHD. It sounds intriguing, but it is also important to note that too much weight is often placed on this study. Why? Because all of this information is based on the results of only 20 individuals (10 whom took the Ritalin and 10 who took the dietary supplements). Of course we should not discount the research because of a small sample size, but out of the millions who suffer from ADHD, do we really want to hinge a bunch of expectations on 20 individuals? Nevertheless, the results are worth reporting and are due much further investigation.
Here are 9 different possibilities cited by the article for nutritional deficiencies or environmental factors which could affect the onset of ADHD (I subdivided one of the categories, there are only 8 in the original article). I will list them here, and investigate each one in more detail in later posts:
- Food allergies and food additives
- Toxic effects of heavy metals or environmental contaminants
- Protein-carbohydrate imbalances
- Mineral deficiencies or imbalances
- Fatty acid deficiencies or imbalances
- Amino acid deficiencies or imbalances
- Thyroid dysfunction and iodine deficiencies
- B vitamin deficiencies
- Antioxidant levels, including phytonutrients and polyphenols (found in fruits, vegetables, coffee, teas, wines, beer and a few other sources).

I usually love the gradual creeping in of Autumn, with a little nip in the air and the beautiful changes of colour all around. However, right now in South East UK the summer has definitely sodded off and Autumn has crept in with a damp, soggy, lack of ceremony. Still, we can always cheer ourselves up by making a fabulous, useful new handmade garment! Today Id like to share with you what I intend to rustle up over the next few months.
The reason I havent called this post Autumn/Winter Sewing Plans, is that I expect all these garments will see wear throughout the year, not just in A/W. All the pieces Im planning should be layer-able and to be worn in a variety of outfit combos. Im all about maximum wardrobe versatility! Plus, if youre not from or living in the UK, Ill let you into a little secret: the weather here isnt really that bad. The reason why British people are known for moaning so much about it is its unpredictability. MI5 may well be onto me now.... Most other parts of the globe get way more extreme weather of some form or another, but generally most places know what to expect for their season or climate. Here, you can plan a BBQ in July and have it ruined by rain, or you can plan a Novembers day at the indoor soft-play or cinema and find it deserted because its suddenly turned bright and lovely outside. Generally, the rule of thumb is: if its nice GET THE HELL OUTSIDE, it may cloud over by the afternoon.
When it comes to sewing, I am reluctant to state my intended projects as I hate to be tied to my plans, even if its only myself who will be holding me to account. However, Im super excited (at the moment) about each of the following, perhaps even enough to see them all through to completion! Im keeping my sewing projects for Dolores completely spontaneous and commitment-free, so hopefully I can it both ways (planned and unplanned) for a while. Heres what Ive been cooking up...

This will be my third attempt at the Wiksten Tova Top/Dress pattern. I wear my grey dress (now worn as a tunic) regularly, and Id love to have another shorter and lighter weight version. Ive got some gorgeously soft light-weight denim/cotton from the Fabric Godmother lined up and Im going to aim for a super neat finish as I want this garment to be something I keep for years and years that improves with wear. Alright, this wont be a nippy weather garment exactly, but layered with a vest or jersey top underneath and a cardi on top, itll still count!
I still love my 1960s Breton top (pictured above) sooo much, its almost weird. Its super comfy, but also feels fairly stylish. I plan to push this magic combo further still by making an even more casual version with some stripy French terry that I was kindly given by the Fabric Godmother.

Having recently started teaching at Wendy Wards MIY Workshop in Brighton, Im becoming better acquainted with her products and I really fancy having a bash at the MIY Collection Brightside Shrug. This is a similar shape to a lovely emerald knit shrug that I scored in a charity shop that I wear quite a lot, and something similar in a different colour would be really useful.

My first and second versions of Gerties easy knit skirt pattern have been real successes, and I like wearing both more than any other skirt I have ever owned. Im hoping Ive got some more suitable knit fabric lurking in my stash for another (hopefully black...).

I think this pattern is hasnt been out for long, and when I saw it, I knew it was the pattern I had been waiting for to make a much-needed and longed for rain jacket. Every year, around this time, the shops seem to temp us with a nice, new, little (or rather big) selection of perfumes just released in time to fill our christmas stockings! and each year, the perfumes on my list seem to go from liking one or two to liking 10! But as I was flicking through a magazine last week, I saw an advert for Vivienne Westwoods new perfume Naughty Alice. Now I dont know about you, but every now and again I see a perfume and know ill like it before ive even smelt it, (is that crazy?) but this definitely happened to be one of those perfumes.
I love the simplistic but pretty bottle and packaging, and the hint towards one of my favourite ever books/movies (note the looking glass/mirror on the packaging and the colour, and of course the name!) but with a more grown up, feminine twist.

Needless to say I immediately went out to try it and my prediction wasnt wrong. its a soft, pretty, musky fragrance and it dries to a sweet smelling scent which I really like, however its not weak one! it lasts all day long (I did spray it about 5 times though! oops.). This is definitely on the top of my christmas list this year!

A few days ago Oracle offered me a position of Oracle ACE Director, and I accepted it. Thanks Oracle. Im glad to see that Oracle has evaluated my activities and we can have a good relationships each other. Oracle has been great for MySQL so far and Id be happy to keep contributions.
Since I live in Tokyo and my native language is Japanese, I usually do community activities in Japanese (speaking at conferences in Tokyo, publishing books written in Japanese, etc). Id like to do more in English, and my employer DeNA thankfully supports it. Right now its confirmed that Ill speak at OSCON.Data in July, and at Oracle Open World in October. Personally I havent traveled to Europe for years so its great if I have an opportunity to speak at MySQL/Linux conferences in Europe.

Drawn to sleep. Ive been having better sleep of late and counting my blessings. Ive been afflicted with a sleep disorder most of my life and when I was a child it used to terrorize me all morning. By sunrise Id feel rescued. Then I would dread the sun setting knowing that night was coming and it starts over.
This explains why I follow the adventures of a character who shares my malady. I know it so well. But with a good regimen of exercise and focusing on modifying my old stress responses I seem to have gained an upper hand at it, after all these years.
Although Ive lived long enough with it to know not to declare a victory outright. Ive experienced many lapses in episodes over the years only to see them come back with a vengeance.
Drawing helps. So, heres our girl in a rare nap. She looks so tired and likely fell asleep during the day--messing up a job opportunity. I wonder what shes dreaming right now.

This might sound strange, but as I walked around photographing produce and farmlife I gasped everytime I looked up and saw this monumental mountain standing before me, and I kept saying in my head, "Hello your majesty" every time I did. I was so in awe of this mountain it literally kept taking my breath away. Id be in the lavendar field crouched down shooting little purple buds and glance up at this giant beauty and I couldnt help feel in full wonder. Peeking through the wheat examining their contrast of glow and dark from the sun warming behind them was so healing for me. I literally had a whole roll of just wheat photos. I know I might be sounding like a strange, but I realized I hadnt really been in nature in a long time. I loved this day at the farm, I fell in love with a pig as it snorted up next to me and I felt the value of its life knowing what animals provide for us. Im not a vegetarian, though Ive considered it several times and try to minimize my meat consumption for health but I do believe in value, especially something that gives its life for us to enjoy. So I appreciate wholesome farms and really enjoyed getting next to the lives that serves us so greatly.
The food pictured above is roasted heirloom vine tomato, goat cheese bruschetta. Perfect for a day like this.
