Nobody Cares if You Live or Die Out There Have a Great Weekend!
Nobody Cares if You Live or Die Out There Have a Great Weekend!
It was a short week, so Im going to spare you the quiz, and instead remind you once again that when youre on a bike in New York City youre completely on your own:
The driver of this car chased @bryanbanducci and @shawn182 on their way home from work. The driver followed them at high speed for several blocks, threw a water bottle at them, and chased them into the protected bike lane on Flushing Ave in an attempt to run them over. We called the @nypd They said because the driver did not succeed in hitting them, there was nothing they could do. This is unacceptable. This is not #visionzero Drivers cannot use their cars to terrorize cyclists. The car is a Honda Odyssey License plate GUY1290 This dangerous aggressive driver needs to be stopped, and the police response is shameful. @transportationalternatives @billdeblasio @paulsteelywhite #visionzero #nypd @gothamistA photo posted by Anna Maria (@annamariastyles) on
I suspect pretty much every cyclist in New York City has a story like this. (Really, I suspect pretty much every cyclist everywhere has a story like this, except maybe in Holland where the worst thing that happens is someone taking up too much space at the bike rack with a bakfiets.) Hey, I was already on the receiving end of a little completely unwarranted road rage this morning, and it wasnt even 8:30am yet.
I also suspect you scoffed as heartily as I did when you read that the NYPD said there "was nothing they could do" because "the driver did not succeed in hitting them." This is because we all know that even if the driver did hit them theres a pretty good chance the police response would be the same.
You bet your ass youd better have a bell on your bike though, or else youll be in big trouble:

So far this year, motorists have killed 12 cyclists on New York City streets, an increase from five at the same point last year, according to the New York Times.
Other than a one-week initiative in May to keep bike lanes clear of motor vehicles, the NYPD hasnt updated its usual approach to bike safety ticketing cyclists who break the letter of the law but dont endanger anyone.
Even after a driver was shown on video deliberately running over von Ohlen, inflicting fatal injuries, the local precinct responded by ticketing cyclists and handing out flyers.
And with that, Im going someplace where Im free from both addled drivers and draconian cycling crackdowns, and thats a little place I like to call "mountain biking." So Ill see you back here on Monday, but in the meantime Im going to leave you with this:
Which, as far as I can tell, is the worlds fastest "bum bar" bike:

It may have taken well over a hundred years, but I think weve finally dialed in the design of the safety bicycle.

Negativity Toxicity And Other Things You Just Dont Need
Negativity Toxicity And Other Things You Just Dont Need

Does this person make me question my own instincts or sanity? The term "gaslighting" gets thrown around a fair bit, almost to the point at which it means nothing. (We, as a collective society, have literally gaslighted the term "gaslight.") Its a very serious form of psychological abuse wrapped in a ubiquitously misused term. Nonetheless, its something that can happen to anybody, and does happen quite often. I once had a friend who would be passive-aggressive until I would instinctively become defensive. When I called her out on it, she would deny it all, then ask if my actions could have been caused by my mental illness, which made me feel a little "crazy." It happened again. And again. And again, until I genuinely didnt know which parts of my mind to trust, if any. I began to feel as if none of my emotions were reliable, which was made worse by her saying things like "youre a ticking time bomb" and "I always have to walk on eggshells around you." Shed say it with a charming smile though, so I couldnt tell if she was genuinely concerned, or just trying to take a jab at me. More often than not, it made me feel bad for her and very, very (excuse my French) shitty about myself. Thats all it takes to be emotionally manipulated.
There are a few ways to tell is this is happening to you. First and foremost, when confronted his or her behavior, does this person vehemently deny any wrongdoing? Does she seem justifiably indignant? Does he take on a resolute character and cause you to question your sanity? Are you constantly second-guessing yourself? Do you ever feel like you used to be a completely different person, stronger, happier, and more confident?
Does this person ever genuinely apologize? Im not good at admitting when Im wrong. At all. But for the people I love, I will do it because its important. You cant be right 100% of the time. Its impossible. There are some people Ive come to know over the course of my lifes journey though who simply cannot say the two little words "Im sorry." Or, if they do say it, theres always some kind of catch. A classic example of this is "Im sorry... that you were offended," or "Im sorry... that you didnt understand what I was saying." Just like we cant be right all the time, we also cant be an absolute joy to be around most of the time, which is why knowing how and when to apologize is an absolutely crucial skill. There cant be harmony in a relationship in which the (inevitable) mistakes are not acknowledged and accounted for. When one person is willing to apologize and the other isnt, the conflict stays open. The relationship becomes uneven, and its easier for more disagreements to arise. Think of it as the foundation of a house. For every misstep, a stone is taken away. If both parties take responsibility and apologize, a stronger stone is put in its place. If one (or neither) party will admit to being wrong and refuse to give an actual apology, the hole stays open. You may know what happens to a house when the foundation is dangerously compromised. (Its not good.)
Is this person generally negative, and do I often share the same negative sentiments? This one is a little harder to identify because negativity can often manifest itself in the subtlest of ways. Moreso, its only natural to become desensitized after a while. I know it can be difficult but try your hardest to think about your friend or significant other objectively. From an outsiders perspective, does this person spread joy, or misery? Does this person seem to knit-pick the most insignificant details? Most importantly, does your own inner monologue turn more towards wretchedness and complaining when youre around this person?
Does this person blame me for things that are out of my control? There are so many possible instances of this so Ill use another personal example. I once had a friend tell me that Im "difficult to deal with" because my struggles with mental illness and the episodes that come along with it bring back unsavory feelings and reminders of a particularly angry time in her life. When she told me this, I was devastated because I would never intentionally hurt her. It bothered me until I really began to carefully unpack her statement and realized the problem here is twofold.
My mental illness issues aside, (because I will admit, for me its an explanation and never an excuse but certainly not something friends should be using as an attack) when somebody blames then guilts you for making them feel a certain way, thats a huge red flag. Theres a difference between you doing something mean and somebody saying, "you made me sad" and somebody accusing you of causing an unhealthy thought pattern to develop. If somebody in your life is doing this, stop feeling bad and tell yourself that they, and ONLY they, are responsible for their thoughts. After all, if youre such a negative influence, wouldnt they just cut the relationship off? This is another form of psychological manipulation and the more I looked into it, the more I realized that this is not an uncommon phenomenon. Its very similar to projecting.
Does this person own up to her shortcomings in the same way she expects me to? This one is simple. Take a look at what is expected of you and see if she holds herself to the same standard.
By now, you should have an inkling about who the potentially toxic people in your life may be. Now what? Ending a relationship is REALLY hard. Its heartbreaking and the often "necessity" of it does little to quell the pain. You want to make sure that your life will be better off without this person and you want to make sure that you lay it all out there so there are no regrets going forward.
Is this person even aware of what theyre doing? A very large part of me wants to believe that not all people have insidious plans for others. Just because somebody may be hurting you in one of more of the ways mentioned above, they may not even be aware of it. However, calling them out may not always be the best idea, as manipulative people are cunning liars by nature. They may adamantly deny any wrongdoing, and if youre not a strong enough person, may turn it around to make it seem as if you are the hurtful one. I recommend journaling. Make note of every thing this person does to make you feel unhappy or unsure about yourself. If you have a conversation and your friend is genuinely apologetic, you should have another conversation about how youre going to treat each other going forward. If he or she isnt understanding, you may need to consider sticking a fork in it.
Do I explain myself to this person, or ghost them? I personally dont think that ghosting is a good idea. Even if the other person is past the point of reasonability, its good that you get all of your grievances out. (If for nothing else, then just for your own peace of mind.) Sit down and talk about why you have to move on. Dont be hurtful, however tempting it may be. Explain that you need time to reflect on what you need to live your best life. A real friend will understand. Remember that self-care is not selfish. It will sting for a while but youll eventually come to realize how much better life is when youre not being manipulated into feeling bad about yourself and questioning yourself at every junction.
When in doubt, take a break. If youre not ready to cut this person out, take a little break from them and their influence. Make yourself busy and occupy your time with things that make you feel good about yourself. (Because you need it!) If you feel a lot better about yourself during this break, you may have your answer.
I wish you all the best! Remember that above everything else, you deserve to be surrounded by people who build you up and owe absolutely nothing to the ones who tear you down.
xo,

New Project Hello Do you believe in God
New Project Hello Do you believe in God
In which I ask strangers Hello. Do you believe in God? and post what they reply.
I got the idea when an internet chum showed me a website that acts as a chat room for one on one chats with strangers (which sounds creepy when you write it down). I kinda like it because its anonymous, and no one else is listening, which helps to lead to interesting answers.
I havent excluded, censored or altered any. Even the ones where I come across like an Idiot with a My-First-Dvorak-Keyboard, so there is a certain amount of wheat vs chaff going on.
Ill give you two examples. Firstly:
And then to lower the tone:
The rest are here. Hope you like them.

No Soup for You
No Soup for You
In an interesting development the Baseball Writers Association of America voted to restrict eligibility for its awards to players who do not receive compensation for winning the award. The straw that apparently broke the camels back was a clause in Curt Schillings contract that would pay him $1M for receiving any Cy Young vote at all. Joe Posnanski had an interesting take on all this several weeks ago that you can read at his blog.
The response seems a little overblown from my perspective. After all, a team that allows such a ridiculous clause to exist surely understands the risk they take. In the case of a player of Schillings calibre it would seem as if the team is already resigned to paying the incentive. Given the voting record of the BBWAA I would never be surprised if any individual player received a vote. And although incentives create temptation for writers and players alike, it doesnt seem to be of a different animal than that for a writer tossing a vote to a player in order to get on his good side and therefore be first in line for that next big scoop. In the end, if a writer were to receive a kick-back and it became public knowledge, the career-ending nature of the event would serve as an excellent way to naturally curb that kind of behavior. In general I liked Joes piece but when discussing why he would no longer be allowed to vote if incentives like Schillings proliferated he said:
The reason is obvious: I could not vote on something where my signature may or may not earn Curt Schilling $1 million. Thats not just a conflict of interest, thats a skirmish of interest, a police action of interest, a full-fledged war of interest.
Really? That seems strange since we all know that winners of these awards end up earning more in terms of arbitration awards, via free agency, and perhaps even endorsements. So while the connection is certainly not as direct, the concept is the same and Im sure this fact is not lost on the writers. If media outlets are concerned about a conflict of interest then of course the awards should be scrapped altogether.

No Im not back back I just wanna tell you about this Citi Bike post
No Im not back back I just wanna tell you about this Citi Bike post
Hi! Just poking my head out of the vacation hole for a moment to bring you this announcement:
As Citi Bike continues to begrime New York City by expanding its service area further uptown and deeper into Brooklyn, Ive been visiting these neighborhoods and showcasing the top-notch Cat 6-ing opportunities now on offer to my fellow bike share enthusiasts. To that end, on a rainy day not too long ago, I flitted back and forth across Central Park and the East and West Sides of Manhattan. Here is the resultant post, which just popped up on their blog:

And with that, Im returning to the recesses of my vacation hole, and Ill see you all back here on Tuesday, September 6th with regular updates. (Assuming I can find my way out, that is.)
Happy Whatever,
