Neerja is an upcoming 2016 Indian biographical film directed by Ram Madhvani starring Sonam Kapoor in titular role and Shabana Azmi and Shekhar Ravjiani in supporting roles. The film was produced by Atul Kasbekar under the banner of Fox Star Studios.The film revolves around the factual hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan specifically focusing on flight attendant Neerja Bhanot. This film shows how the young flight attendant fought for the lives of her passengers. The film is scheduled for release on February 19, 2016.
Rucha Pathak, head of creative and development, Fox Star Studios, said in a statement. "When we heard the script of Neerja, we immediately knew we wanted to make the film. Its the kind of content that Fox Star instinctively believes in and wants to back. Captained by Ram Madhvani, and with Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi, Neerja, we believe, is a cracker of a film.Principal photography of the film began around 19 April 2015, and is set to release on February 19, 2016.The films music has been composed by Vishal Khurana and the lyrics have been penned by Prasoon Joshi.The films music rights were acquired by T-Series.The story and screenplay was penned by Saiwyn Quadras and the dialogues by Sanyuktha Chawla Sheikh.
The makers of the movie admitted to the tremendous amount of responsibility the task of portraying this story carried. One challenge faced was when there were issues acquiring a real plane for shooting. Due to this the director Ram Madhvani & Rucha Pathak, Creative Officer of Fox Studios decided to go for re-creating the plane(as major part of the film required shooting against the plane back-drop). But it was a major challenge to re-create the Pan-Am plane with the feel of how planes used to be in 1986. The daunting process took 48 days and plane was painstakingly designed, built with all the door-knobs,cabins, shutters even the Analog meters used in 1980s plane cockpits etc.
The films official trailer launched on 17 December 2015 on Fox Star Studios YouTube channel and social media properties. The trailer launch event will be attended by the late Neerja Bhanots real brothers Akhil Bhanot and Aneesh Bhanot. The films official logo was launched on 15 December 2015; 2 days prior to the trailer launch by Kapoor on her official Twitter handle and there by on Fox Star Studios social media properties. It was received well by the audiences and the film fraternity was abuzz with this news.
