New White House report claims more jobs from stimulus bill

New White House report claims more jobs from stimulus bill

According to the July 14, 2010 article "New WH report claims more jobs from stimulus bill," the Obama administration claims the federal government stimulus spending program prevented unemployment in the U.S. from being worse than it was. Claims such as this are impossible to prove (or disprove), however. The report is an attempt to deflect blame from the President for the condition of the economy and to inform the public that the Obama administration has been pursuing the standard remedies for fighting economic recession: expansionary fiscal policy (in the forms of increased government spending and tax cuts) and expansionary monetary policy (in the form of low interest rates).

According to the article:

WASHINGTON – A new White House report says last years $862 billion stimulus law has now "saved or created" between 2.5 million and 3.6 million jobs.

Thats up from 2.2 million to 2.8 million in the last quarterly report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Christina Romer, head of the council, says in congressional testimony prepared for Wednesday that every $1 from the stimulus bill is matched by $3 in private money.

She says the law "appears to be stimulating private investment and job creation at a time when the economy needs it most."

President Barack Obama has traveled the country telling voters that as bad as things are, theyd be worse without the stimulus. He acknowledges the message is a tough sell. Obama travels Thursday to Michigan.

NEW IN PLAY NO MORE

NEW IN PLAY NO MORE

BAG - Play No More

New in is my playful, bright and characteristic Play No More - SHYGIRL’ bag,
I was browsing Fenwick on Bond St, saw this and didn’t purchase it the first time. Not being an impulse bag buyer usually as they are big purchases so for me I feel like I have to be totally 100% decided on one before taking the plunge.
I got home the night after browsing the shop and just couldn’t get it out of my head! For a few days even…then I eventually went back, tried it on, tried the different colours too and then settled on the white one (The pink is also super cute).

Play No More is a Korean brand and I am so glad it is stocked in London as I hadn’t heard of it online before and am glad I randomly stumbled across it.
The bag itself is vegan friendly which is a good plus and it is such a perfect size, I can fit everything i’d want and need for the day inside it and its very well structured.
The only con to the bag is that to open and close it can be a pain if you want to use the little lock on the front each time - sometimes when i’m shopping I just leave the lock inside the bag.
Other than that - I am SO happy with this mid-range purchase and the bright, lightheartedness of this bag makes me feel more carefree and experimental with my style.
It works with a more expressionate outfit and also a minimal one.

Do you have one? What do you think of it?

No DRM More sales

No DRM More sales

Here you go.

Who would have thought, DRM free MP3 downloads, that give you the same rights and abilities as a CD (i.e. the ability to make copies, backups, and lend to a friend) have resulted in increased sales for EMI. Some CDs are up by over 300%!

But its more easily pirateable! This just doesnt make any sense! Bear is driving how can this be?

No more J2EE webapps

No more J2EE webapps

I got my start in my programming career over 7 years ago developing web applications as part of the intranet group for a Fortune 500 company. The group was switching from developing in Haht (I believe back then it was some type of vbscript) to Java (JSPs and Servlets). I joined the group at the moment they switched to Weblogic 5.1, JDK 1.3, and Oracle 8i (I think). It was a fast paced environment as we cranked out one internal application after another. Of course back then I wasnt the best web developer, but by the time I left I felt pretty confident in being able to hold my own (but humble at the same time).

One thing that always stayed the same throughout creating each one of those applications was the ability to rapidly develop them. What do I mean by rapidly develop? To me this means making a change and being able to switch to my browser and verify that change and repeating that hundreds of times a day.

That is how things were when I moved on 5 years later: (change + save + refresh) x 100s. Now it has been around 2 years since I have developed a real web application and for some reason that process has disappeared. For some reason my fellow J2EE developers have come to accept the process of rebuilding and hot deploying or even restarting the application server FOR EVERY CHANGE! Thousands or even millions of minutes are lost everyday by J2EE developers out there producing software like this. And to that I say, not good enough.

Maybe I am missing something; if so please enlighten me by commenting to this post. Take the JBoss Application Server (AS) 4.2.1 for example. I have tried finding better ways to deploy a WAR (exploded or bundled) on JBoss with no luck. The best I can come up with is increasing the JVMs PermSpace for better hot deployment (article), but I am still left with having to rebuild the WAR and copying it over. And sooner or later I have to restart the server. What a waste.

At one time there use to be a really slick maven 1 tomcat plugin made by codeczar.com that supported the ability to tell tomcat where your webapp was, preventing you from having to rebuild and redeploy. It was a huge time saver, but unfortunately this plugin is no longer supported (see here). If you are curious you can still get this plugin here thanks to Google Cache. The documentation has also been copied here.

Where does that leave me? Any language that lets me develop at a fast rate. Even if I lose tons of reusable components. I would imagine the time I save not rebuilding/redeploying more than makes up for reusable components and other goodies J2EE offers. In fact that has been the main reason for my personal quest to learn Grails and Rails. To me these languages offer the ability to deliver faster and cheaper and I believe this article supports that. If I had to start a new web project I would definitely look long and hard at either Grails or Rails.

No more Lavish Weddings for Hyd Muslims Andhra News Daily

Lavish Weddings have always been a issue of concern in a country like India. Most of the families in the country treat the expenditure spent during the marriage ceremonies as a matter of pride. Eventually, They end up getting debt ridden.

As per an estimate, Muslims based in Hyderabad alone spend around Rs 4,000 crore per year on Weddings.

High Expenditure and Dowry has badly affected majority of the poor and middle-class Muslims in Hyderabad. As a result, Hyderabads Muslim Organisations have decided to impose fine on the families who were found to spending a bomb on such ceremonies.
