New UC Salary Data 2010 was a Good Year for Higher Earners
New UC Salary Data 2010 was a Good Year for Higher Earners
New UC salary data is now available at Jeffrey Bergaminis compensation database, and it reveals that in 2010, there were 4,237 UC employees making more than $200,000 for a total gross pay of $1.26 billion and a base pay of $744 million. This means that for the over 200k club, more than 40% of their pay came from extra pay; moreover, the over $200,000 earners raked in 12% of the gross pay for the whole system ($9.3 billion), while they represented under 3% of the regular employees and less than 1% of the total number of employees (including student workers).
If we compare 2010 to 2008 and 2006, we find that in 2006, there were 2,464 employees making over $200K with a total gross pay of $680 million, while in 2008, there were 3,643 high earners with a total gross salary of $1 billion. In other words, during the UCs fiscal crisis, we have seen a continual increase of employees entering into the over-200K club.
To further investigate who makes up this class of high earners, we can break down these employees into six major categories: administrators, medical faculty, athletic coaches, business school professors, academic professors (excluding business and law professors), and law professors. These six categories accounted for over 95% of the revenue of the over $200,000 club in 2010.
Starting with the medical faculty, we find that in 2010, there were 2,772 medical faculty making over $200,000 for a total gross pay of $867.4 million. This means that in the period of 2008 to 2010, the medical faculty in the over 200k range increased their numbers by 476, while their total gross pay went up $187.4 million. It is clear that the medical centers are an economic powerhouse that drive inequality in the UC system.
The second biggest group in the over-200k club is the administrators. In 2010, we find 351 bureaucrats making a total of $102 million, while in 2008, there were 397 administrators in the over 200k club making a total of $109 million. In other words, due to the downsizing of the Office of the President, there are now fewer administrators in the over-$200,000 club, but their average pay is higher.
The next biggest group of high earners are the academic professors outside of law, medicine, and business. In 2010, there were 397 professors making over $200,000 for a collective gross pay of $93 million. If we compare these figures to 20008, we discover that this group has been reduced by 18 people, and their collective pay has gone down by $3.6 million.
In the case of the business school faculty, in 2008, there were 372 faculty making more than $200,000 for a collective gross pay of $93 million, while in 2010, 439 high-earning professors had a collective gross pay of $115 million. This statistics show that while the number of general campus, high-earning professors has been decreased, the medical and business professors making over $200,000 has continued to increase.
In the case of law professors, we find that in 2008, there were 85 making over $200,000 for a collective pay of $21 million, and in 2010, this same group consisted of 96 professors making a collective gross pay of $25 million. So we once again, we see a trend of increasing the number of high-earning professors in the professional schools, while the nonprofessional school professors are reduced.
The final group is the athletic coaches; in 2008, there were 24 coaches making over $2000,000 for a collective payout of $12.8 million, and in 2010, this same group has 35 employees at a collective gross pay of $16 million. In other words, the athletic departments continue to do well in bad times.
These statistics show that as the university continues to rely increasingly on undergraduate tuition to fund the system, more of the pay is going to people working outside of undergraduate education. Moreover, since the UC is the third biggest employer in California, we can see how the wage disparities in the UC system contribute to the growing wage inequality in the state.

No Good Deed (2014)
Director: Sam Miller
Screenplay: Aimee Lagos
Production company: Screen Gems
Producers: William Packer, Lee Clay
Initial release: September 12, 2014 (USA)
No Good Deed is an upcoming American crime thriller film directed by Sam Miller and written by Aimée Lagos. The film stars Idris Elba, Taraji P. Henson, Kate del Castillo, Mark Smith, Henry Simmons, Wilbur Fitzgerald and Frank Brennan. The film is set to be released on September 12, 2014. The films storyline follows a former District Attorney turned stay-at-home mom (Henson) and her two small children who are terrorized and kidnapped after she invites a handsome but mysterious stranger (Elba) into their home to wait for help after his car runs off the road. [2Terri, a devoted wife and mother of two, lives an ideal life that takes a dramatic turn when her home and children are threatened by Colin, a charming stranger who smooth-talks his way into her house, claiming car trouble. The unexpected invitation leaves her and her family terrorized and fighting for survival. No Good Deed was initially set to be released on October 18, 2013. In January of 2013, Screen Gems announced the film would be moved to open on January 17, 2014, at the beginning of the MLK Holiday weekend. This date conflicted with another Will Packer-produced film, Ride Along, a Universal Pictures release that stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. For this reason, in April 2013, the studio pushed back No Good Deeds release date for a second time to April 25, 2014. Yet again, in early October 2013 (and giving no specific reason), Screen Gems for a third time pushed backed the release date of the film to September 12, 2014.[4][5] Sony Pictures Releasing debuted the first official trailer for the film on June 12, 2014.[6][7] The crime thriller will be going head-to-head at the box office against Universals comedy Search Party starring T. J. Miller, Warner Bros. family film Dolphin Tale 2 and Clarius Entertainments thriller Before I Go to Sleep starring Nicole Kidman.[8.

No Rhyme No Reason Feeling good
No Rhyme No Reason Feeling good
No Rhyme or reason these days to the training/riding. The past week has been topsy turvy with wife out of town and having the kids and work. Itll be another week till things settle down as I go out of town.
There have been no events on my calendar to work towards which leads to non-structured riding. Typically this leads to noticeable fitness loss, however this time around things seems to be going great. In fact Id almost venture to say Im riding as well if not stronger than last year.
Its been so lax that I havent even been keeping a log of the rides, rest, etc. There are a couple of basic observations that seem apparent though.
First is my eating plan and weight. The Paleo Diet for Athletes plan seems to be working well for me. Its become general sort of plan that is followed about 75% of the time. While riding Im typically using only energy drink and am riding pretty strong for up to 2.5-3hrs as long as Ive scarfed well 3 hours prior. Sugar spiking is under control more. Appetite is down in general. Weight is stable and lower than in the past. Though for sure its got some downsides.
Its only a few pounds but it sure seems to be noticeable on the bike. I feel more punchy. My riding style seems to include more out of the saddle efforts than in the past. Its kinda fun. Dancing on the pedals a little. Not for very long or very fast but it feels fun.
Training rides have been shorter and with some good intensity. Cant bring myself to do any intervals on the trainer, but outside I just try to find some hills and hardly ever more then 1.5-2hrs If I ride at lunch, it includes the hardest route back to the office. Then a few days without anything, maybe a commute on the bike. A day to get the legs back and then a couple of short hard rides. Every 2 weeks a good MTB in there.
After a few days off the bike, its a little mentally hard to actually get back on sometimes. Which seems ironic to me. Id think Id be pining to get back out but it seems to take a little effort to make the time to get out.
So all in all riding is fun and I feel fit

Netflix Geography Age Gender Not Good Predictors
Netflix Geography Age Gender Not Good Predictors
David Morris wrote an article this week for Fortune titled, "Netflix: Geography, Age, and Gender are Garbage for Predicting Taste." Morris writes,
"Geography, age, and gender? We put that in the garbage heap, VP of product Todd Yellin said. Instead, viewers are grouped into clusters almost exclusively by common taste, and their Netflix homepages highlight the relatively small slice of content that matches their taste profile. Those profiles could be the same for someone in New Orleans as someone in New Delhi (though they would likely have access to very different libraries)."
Why is this statement so fascinating? To me, it speaks directly to Netflixs competitive advantage. If geography, age, and gender were, in fact, accurate predictors of viewers preferences, then Netflix would have a far less formidable advantage over rivals. Why? Well, those variables are easy to identify and measure. Others can get access to that data quite easily and build predictive algorithms using that information. However, if more accurate predictive algorithms involve data that are not as publicly available, then Netflix has a key advantage. In other words, if the predictive power rests with variables that come from proprietary data that Netflix has collected about us, then the sustainability of Netflixs advantage over competitors rises substantially. The same holds true for any company trying to take advantage of "big data" to develop predictive algorithms. The key is to unearth variables that matter, but hopefully, variables that are not easily identified and measured by others.

Naturally Increasing Dopamine Levels The Brains Feel Good Chemical
Naturally Increasing Dopamine Levels The Brains Feel Good Chemical

If you are like me, once the holidays are over, I feel more stressed and tired than usual. There has been an influx of travel, extra tasks and stress at work, RLS symptoms surfacing more than normal, and both of my parents already deteriorating health have taken a turn for the worse lately. I could use a "boost". Something to aid in pushing on and keeping a positive mindset.
A way to do this is by naturally increasing the dopamine levels in your brain. Dopamine is a "feel good" chemical in your brain, much like the neurotransmitter serotonin. Studies have shown that a depletion of dopamine is linked to depression. Dopamine is normally triggered when you approach and expect a reward or some type of satisfaction. The release of dopamine in the brain provides a good feeling along with a surge of energy, which results in an increase of motivation.

It is comforting to know that one can work on improving their mood and life without having to automatically see a doctor and get prescribed medication. Sometimes all we need is that extra "boost". There are different types food that naturally help dopamine levels when consumed plus everyday actions that you can do for yourself to help along the way. I know more sleep is absolutely something I need to make a priority. Then there are natural supplements that can be purchased on Amazon or local drug stores. As usual, consult your doctor or pharmacist before purchasing anything to ensure that it would not interfere with any medication you may be on now.
Tyrosine forms DOPA, which is then converted to dopamine, and this, in turn, forms norepinephrine, another neurotransmitter related to mood. By supporting the production of neurotransmitters like dopamine, L-tyrosine supplements can improve emotional well-being, sleep, mood, and cognitive/mental function, especially under situations involving environmental and emotional stress.
Mucuna pruriens, commonly known as "velvet bean", naturally contains upwards of 5% L-Dopa (levodopa). L-DOPA is the same biochemical that is made in humans from the amino acid L-tyrosine and is then integrated into dopamine.
L-theanine is an amino acid uniquely found in green tea that creates a state of alterted relaxation, meaning there is no drowsiness. L-theanine is known to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier and increase dopamine levels in the brain.
Rhodiola is something a few of friends have said they consume and believe it helps. It is a popular plant in Eastern Europe and Asia, with a reputation for improving depression, enhancing work performance, eliminating fatigue and treating stress symptoms.
These are suggestions and tips anyone could benefit from on a daily basis. Sometimes we all need that extra "push" especially with it being a brand new year!
