NetBeans 6 5 Explore Practically

Following the NetBeans session on 24th January, we also conducted a small lab session the same day, where we provided the students with a lab and allowed them to explore the various features of NetBeans.

As the tech session conducted that day was an introductory session on NetBeans, we didn’t stress much on a specific project or language at the lab. Instead we allowed students to download NetBeans 6.5 from our local Sun Server and install it on the system. We also allowed them to configure Cygwin by providing them with a copy of Cygwin tools.

Besides this, they also tried a few C, C++ and Java programs depending on their interest. After the lab session, the students were confident that they could install NetBeans at their systems at home and start working with it. Besides this we also put up step-by-step guides for the students to install NetBeans 6.5 and configure C, C++ and PHP in NetBeans, just in case somebody has any problem installing it.

Neca Cult Classics series 5 Leatherface

Continuing with my coverage of all things Texas Chain saw Massacre I will be doing a review on whats easily the best Leatherface figure in the 7 inch scale. Necas Cult Classics line has been absent from shelves for years now which is a real shame. By the fifth series (made up of Ash, Leatherface, Jigsaw, and Hannibal) the company had really hit their stride and were delivering great sculpts and highly requested characters. This was the first time this particular version of Leatherface had been updated since McFarlanes initial Movie Maniacs release. What we were given was a more accurate and better articulated figure with a superior sculpt.

The first thing I want to get out of the way is the additional blood on my figure, this was simply something I added myself. The actual figure only has a few small patches of blood on his apron. Moving on, the sculpt and paint on this guy are out of this world. Neca did a great job capturing the characters look in the first film. Even the minute details like the baby teeth and "mallet mark" were covered

The included eight points of articulation are enough to get a handful of basic poses out of the figure though a few more points (especially ball joints) would have been appreciated. Another thing I really enjoy about this release is the dead skin mask, its a separate part of the the headsculpt and its cast in a "rubbery" material. It gives an additional bit of realism to the overall sculpt. The paint detail is spot on and the figure has a handful of different washes giving the clothing a nice grimey look. The only issue I had was with the blood, I was pretty happy with McFarlanes "ultra bloody" first series of Movie Maniacs which is why I decided to add more blood to the crazed killers apron.

The figures included in the Cult Classics line always included a small base, a feature I really miss. Leatherface also included two bones, a mallet, his trusty chainsaw, and a small knife.

If youre wanting a 7 inch Leatherface on your shelf look no further. Necas figure is as close to perfection as it gets and while the company is giving us a "retro" figure later this year it seems they have no real interest in updating and tooling a new sculpt. Its unfortunate because Id certainly be up for a Leatherface featuring their current articulation. Make no mistakes though, if this is one of the last Leatherface toys in this particular scale than we would have ended on a high note. This really is a fantastic figure, one that is worth every penny.

Non persistent connection performance improvements in 5 6

One of my favorite performance improvements in 5.6 is "faster non-persistent connections". I couldnt find this information from release notes, but non-persistent connection is really faster in 5.6.

Here are sysbench micro-benchmark results. I tested from 100 concurrent clients, running remotely. Clients simply connected and disconnected repeatedly.

The whole sysbench command I used is as below.

 --num-threads=100 run

I tested 1000+ connections and got similar numbers.

As you can see, 5.6 is nearly 2x faster than 5.1.

There are many performance improvements in 5.6, so Im not sure which fix contributed the most. I assume the biggest one is that THD (quite a large C++ class inside MySQL) destructor is no longer called during holding a global mutex. Prior to 5.6, THD destructor is called under a global LOCK_thread_count mutex. This is not efficient. I experienced some serious connection/disconnection problems caused by the global mutex in MySQL Cluster a few years ago, and there were some fixes in MySQL Cluster source tree. Now in 5.6, THD destructor is called outside of the LOCK_thread_count mutex as below. This is great news.

5.6 also fixed some connection performance issues reported by Domas. Some of major issues are still ongoing. So once all of them are fixed, we can expect even better performance:)

Apparently persistent connection is much more efficient than non-persistent, but this is not always possible. In addition to that, 5.6 improves query performance in high concurrency as well. I believe many production engineers will welcome these performance improvements.

NetBeans 6 5 Installation

Installation of NetBeans 6.5 requires Java Development Kit 5 or Java Development Kit 6 as a pre-requisite. You can download the required JDK from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/.

The installation procedure of NetBeans is the same in Windows, Linux and Solaris. Since NetBeans is written in Java, it is platform-independent and the installation User-Interface is also same in any operating system. NetBeans 6.5 is available as binaries for all the three Operating Systems - Windows, Linux and Solaris. Download it from http://www.netbeans.org/.

Start the installation by either double-clicking the .exe file in Windows or running the .sh file in Linux and Solaris from the Terminal. This starts the GUI based installation of NetBeans 6.5. Initially it takes a few seconds to configure the installer. The best part of NetBeans is its flexibility. It allows the user to install whatever is required, instead of installing everything. There are few runtimes which are selected by default.

Click on the customize button to select the runtimes which you need. The customize button also gives brief information about each component which is being installed. Also the GlassFish app-server and the Apache Tomcat web-server can also be installed as a part of NetBeans. Accept the license agreement.

Specify the installation directory of NetBeans. Also specify the directory where JDK is installed, the JDK directory is generally recognized by the installer itself. If you customized the installer to install GlassFish v2, the installer will prompt for the required parameters for GlassFish v2. These include the directory path, the admin username and password and the 3 ports - HTTP, HTTPS and admin. All these parameters are initialized to their default values.

Similarly, if you customized the installer for GlassFish v3, specify its directory path. Also, if you customized the installer for Apache Tomcat, specify its directory path.

The installer finally gives a summary of all the components which are to be installed, if you are satisfied with the customized components, start the installation. The installation will take some time depending on your system configuration and the components which are being installed.

Once the installation is complete, the installer will prompt you for registration. It is recommended that users register as there are a lot of offers available for registered users. However the choice of registration is left to the users. That’s it, NetBeans 6.5 is up and ready to use.
