Neca Retro Jason Friday the 13th A New Beginning
Neca Retro Jason Friday the 13th A New Beginning
Fans have long clamored for a figure based upon Jasons look in the fifth Friday the 13th film, one of the more underappreciated films in the Friday franchise. Its easy to write off the fifth installment, after all Jason wasnt really the killer, was he? But after all of these years the 1985 film has amassed quite the die hard fanbase, a group that wants their Jason in figure-form. Im happy to report that the day has finally arrived. Hide the candy bars and lock up the gardening tools; Roy is here.
Neca has given Freddy his due, with multiple lines theyve truly covered every ANOES film. Jason on the other hand always seems to get the cold shoulder. When Neca finally bought back the Friday license some years ago fans thought things would change, unfortunately that wasnt the case. The toy company gave collectors two lines featuring with one "retro" clothed figure. These five toys only covered two of the Friday the 13th films. Thankfully it seems a change is on the horizon, Necas Retro series has been quite the seller. Featuring the same body among figures, the company only really has to manufacture the head and clothing. As this keeps tooling costs down it makes the possibility of seeing more of Jasons "looks" more likely. I think its safe to assume the future is bright over at Camp Crystal Lake.

Weve been waiting a long time for this figure and Im sure youre wondering if it was worth the wait. Im here to report that Necas imposter Jason is an excellent figure sporting multiple points of articulation, a decent selection of accessories, and best of all, Roys mean mug hidden beneath the hockey mask.
Like the other Retro figures Necas released, Roy has (number of articulation). Hes able to adequately hold the garden shears, something I was nervous about. The paint on Jason is also a positive, a layer of dirt and grime has been applied to his coveralls while his hands are stained with blood. When the mask comes off youll find Roy, while one can definitely see Dick Wieands likeness, I think its fair to say it is an exaggerated look.

NECA Retro Friday the 13th Part 2 Jason Voorhees
NECA Retro Friday the 13th Part 2 Jason Voorhees
At this point it seems the resurgence of MEGO inspired collectibles shows no signs of slowing down. Fans love the aesthetics of the toys and Im betting companies are pretty happy with the tooling costs. The latest in Necas retro line is "sack head" Jason from Friday the 13th Part 2, and while it wasnt initially on my "buy list" I couldnt say no when I saw it hanging on the shelf.

Jason uses the same body as past retro figures, the medium build frame sports 14 points of articulation, just enough to capture Jason in a few of his "Im about to kill someone" poses. The clothing used on the particular figure really surprised me, theres a quality here that isnt normally abundant in clothing of this particular scale.
The sack comes off to reveal inbred Jason, if youre reading this Im sure youre familiar with the various incarnations of Jason throughout the series, and while they werent always constant they were each memorable in their own way. Neca uses their previous Part 2 sculpt which looks great and has even more visible detail in its slightly larger size. The feet and hands feature a bit of weathering giving em a nice grimy look.

The Crystal Lake killer includes a machete, pick-ax, and pitchfork.

The idea of owning every single incarnation of Voorhees in one matching scale was once a pipe dream, now thanks to this new retro resurgence it seems its simply just a matter of time. With Neca at the helm you can definitely expect quality, and while these use the same basic body with the clothing its hardly noticeable. I imagine once we get into Hodder territory theyll make a few necessary changes. This retro Part 2 Jason is an awesome collectible perfect for any Friday fan!

Neca Texas Chain Saw Massacre Retro Leatherface
Neca Texas Chain Saw Massacre Retro Leatherface

NECA continues with their retro line giving everyones favorite cannibal killer the Mego treatment. Ive been a big supporter of this line in the past and after their recent releases I dont see that changing any time soon. Even with a few minor paint issues this Leatherface is still a very solid release!

Reusing the head from the Cult Classics series 5 Leatherface, the company doesnt quite meet the standard set forth by McFarlanes 18 inch incarnation, but its damn close. Neca did an excellent job capturing the crazed look Face has before cuttin into poor ol Franklin. While its not perfection, at this scale its the best looking sculpt thus far.
This retro figure utilizes the "type 2" retro body which features an additional two points of articulation at the bicep (for a total of 16 POA). Two measly points might not sound great on paper, but it does actually provide us with a number of options when it comes to posing the killer with his weapon of choice.
Paint is where Im forced to knock off a point or two. On my particular figure the eyebrows are completely off center, theres also a complete lack of paint on the arms which is very jarring and noticeable. Other than those two issues things are pretty copacetic. The paint on Leatherfaces mask is great, featuring that perfect shade of decayed skin tone.
Another thing Ive spoke highly of in the past has been the quality of the clothing. Its really hard to get the look of clothing just right at this scale, but Neca is slowly nearing perfection. Sure, theres the occasional issue of collars standing up, or fabric bunching up around the joints, but when I compare these recent figures to the initial run of Freddy and Jason theres definitely been a number of improvements.
Leatherface includes his trusty chainsaw and hippie mallet. I do want to note that the company has made a few improvements to the chainsaw, it now features removable handles and is made of a less brittle plastic.

Love em or hate em one thing is for sure, with this new line of Retro figures the idea of finally getting those much yearned for Jason, Michael, and Leatherface variations is starting to seem like less of a pipe dream. With the Crimson Ghost and Snake Plissken hitting shelves soon and a new Freddy and Jason announced for 2015 this line shows no signs of slowing down. I say bringem on!
While I have had a few minor issues with some of these releases my feelings towards them has been mostly positive. I love this Leatherface and I think its a solid action figure. He is a must own for fans of the Saw!
