New Old Interview of Rob with WAZ Online Germany
New Old Interview of Rob with WAZ Online Germany

Interview:
Mr. Pattinson usually you are hunted by photographers. How does it feel to play a photographer hunting stars in your new movie Life?
Im playing the young Magnum photographer Dennis Stock, who gets to know James Dean before he became an Icon- no least because of the picture of a moody James Dean in Times Square with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. Stock would have hated it if you called him a papparazzi. He thought of himself as an artist and did everything to be seen as one. That is how I see him.
Okay the times were a little more calm in the 50s. How would you react if someone approached you today and said Hey Rob I want to take a couple of pictures of you like Stock did with Dean?
That would be impossible. l would feel like a psychopath would be after me. But it was different back then. There were no cell phones and not amateur photographers, only professionals and they had to find a magazine to publish their pictures. Today the Internet is flooded with cell phone pictures.
How do you deal with the omnipresent cell phone pictures?
A lot of it depends on my mood. lf lm in a good mood, everything is okay. When lm not, I do feel bothered. You have to watch out to not get strange and feel persecuted: Then you start to believe that people take pictures of you, who actually have better things to do with their day than do that.
Did you cope well with the media hype of Twilight in your early 20s?
Most of the time I was busy hiding. You are in shock. You dont really understand what is happening. My personal growth was stopped in a way. It was weird: There I was 22 and suddenly I aged 2-3 years. I was working and did a lot of movies during that time. It was madness. My first real break I had after the last Twilight movie.
Is it quieter now? No one recognizes you with your huge beard anyway.
Thats true. Now! go to the grocery store without looking around. Fortunately I gained a lot of self-confidence. But lm still cautious: you dont want drunken pictures of yourself out there.
Meanwhile do you think you were able to shake off the teen heartthrob image?
The real problem was: You are measured according to a weird criteria when you are part of gigantic expensive movies, which are so under pressure to perform. The question always is: How many millions will that movie make? its ridiculous! You have to watch out not to get stuck in that world.
You must have made enough money to withdraw yourself from that world. Why dont you?
lts not that much money. You dont really think about it though. Money is not the primary objective of a young actor. And having enough money is no reason to quit.
What is your goal?
Di?icult to say, but a road is appearing slowly, also with my movie choices. During Twilight l basically pushed the reset button every time and then the next movie would come out.
And then?
I took careful steps into reality. I always strictly distinguished: There was the character that I played in the movies and on the other side my real life.
And today?
Now I try to make more personal movies that have more to do with me and where I have more
control. Im making movies with authors like David Cronenberg and now Anton Corbijn.
How is it different with them?
They protect you. They dont let themselves be in?uenced by others- not like a director who works for a big studio. It may happen that there is a call from above and its not the directors ?lm anymore but the studios.
And now you open the doors for those authors: Cronenberg said that your name on the Cosmopolis poster brought financing.
Well, l hope the directors do not only pick me just to get ?nancing. Im also doing very small roles, like in Herzogs Queen of the Desert as Lawrence of Arabia. I dont believe that an actor is able to guarantee success on his name alone. Those times are over, with a few exceptions though: one of those exceptions is Brad Pitt.
A lot of what you say does sound bitter. Would you wish your success with Twilight on younger people/actors?
Hold on, it was also a great time. Twilight is something very special, if only because of the
enthusiastic fans. My advice for young actors would be to not get overwhelmed and they should
watch out and keep a healthy relationship with reality. If not you can drift easily and are not even
aware of it. So take good care of yourself.

New Picture and Interview of Rob in Cosmopolitan Germany
New Picture and Interview of Rob in Cosmopolitan Germany
Thanks to Verena for sending the HQ scans to us :)
Honestly Robert Pattinson, do fame and success drive you crazy sometimes?
Robert Pattinson ate a curry wurst for lunch. That is the first thing he tells me after our hello during our interview in Berlin. He pronounces it adorably Denglish Corrywuscht. I had French fries with it, but only five, he tells me grinning. Im trying to eat more healthy. He doesnt need it though: slightly tanned, the biggest thing about him is his beard, which, like his messy gelled hair, is very groomed. Ever since he played vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga, he is the most sought after blood sucker in the world. The tabloids like to describe him as shy, but here he is smiling non stop, like a rascal planning his next prank. Maybe he is happy that the blockbuster times are over. Ever since the fifth and last Twilight movie came out three years ago he wasnt part of huge commercial Hollywood productions. Independent movies are now his thing. Like the ingenious biopic Life in which he plays the photographer Dennis Stock. He took pictures of James Dean for the US magazine Life in 1955, shortly before Dean died and made him immortal with his pictures. Fame and immortality are not strange concepts for Robert Pattinson, right?
Mr. Pattinson when was the first time you felt you were famous?
That was six months before the second Twilight movie came out. A PR guy invites me to a hip party in a club in LA. I forgot the name of the guy standing at the door waiting to be let in. The doorman just looked at me and said: Its okay, you can go in. I was like what? Until then I never got into the clubs that easily. Shortly after that came the hot dog incident.
Tell me about that.
Well, I was eating a hot dog and dropped mustard on my shirt. Usually that would have made me uncomfortable, but everyone around me said hey, thats totally okay, it was like I did something amazing . Thats when I knew: I can do whatever I want.
Being famous can be confusing then?
Yes, but only in one aspect: I dont like to draw attention to myself, but I cant walk around without being recognized. If people would say a quick hello, it would be fine, but every second person wants to do a selfie. That means I always have to be in a good mood.
Is there a question apart from the picture question, you cant hear anymore?
I know you will hate it, but .
Who says something like that?
Everyone. Especially back then. During Twilight a lot of people were pulling me about and telling me who I am. I didnt know who I was myself and honestly I still dont know who I am. But I wanted to have the chance to find that out by myself.
How did you not go crazy with the huge hysteria that came with Twilight?
Maybe becauseI never wanted to become famous. Im satisfied with small things. The more famous I got, the more I wanted to hide. I was irritated by the hype. The climax of that was in the Munich OlympiaHalle: 3000 fans were cheering when I was answering a question. Its much better now. The Twilight fans got older and its a lot more relaxed now.
Does an ex vampire go into the sun?
Yes. But Im one of those idiots that puts on sunscreen with SPF factor 50 on the first day and then on the second day wonders hey, I didnt get a tan. Lets take SPF 5. That means on every single holiday I get sunburn. Its good that I stayed in London for a while. It cant happen here.
Is London a save haven for you like Marion, Indiana was for James Dean?
London is home for me. I have been living in LA for six years and didnt go to Great Britain for some time. During my last stay in London I realized how much I missed it. But its more the people that give me the feeling of home and not really the places.
In Life you play the photographer that made James Dean a legend. James Dean died when he was 24 years old so you survived him by five years .
You wont believe how many of my friends wrote this message to me on my 28th birthday happy birthday. You are still alive. Me: Did you think I would be dead by now? Them: Yes. Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix and Amy Winehouse, they all died when they were 27.
Do you go to celebrity doctors for your check ups?
No. I went to a dentist in LA who was well know in celebrity circles. There was a techno music playing in the practice. He was telling me about all the people that come to him. The weirdest thing was: he wasnt wearing gloves for the treatment. I was laying there shocked thinking do you think you are so cool that you dont need gloves? Nasty, I didnt go there again.
Did you become weird?
I always have been weird. As soon as I have to talk to more than one person, it gets difficult. Having to do small talk at an event is hell for me. The crazy thing is that most people think that the more famous you get the more confident you are. I learned something about that playing a photographer: a camera around your neck will give you security. With it you get a reason to go to certain places or talk to people. I think I will carry a camera around with me from now on.
This is a readers question: What is the best part about being a celebrity?
That I can choose my roles and that I can go around the queue at the airport. That is the best by far and I dont want to miss it.
